Tower of London

Sightseeing attraction | London | England | United Kingdom

The Tower of London is one of the most famous and significant historical sites in Great Britain. Located on the Thames, it has a history of over a thousand years, closely linked to the development of the British monarchy. Originally built in 1066 by William the Conqueror as part of the Norman conquest of England, the White Tower, the central and oldest building of the fortress, was completed around 1078 and served as a military stronghold and royal residence.

Over the centuries, the Tower has been continuously expanded and redesigned. It served not only as a fortress, but also as a royal palace, prison, mint, armory, archive, and even a zoo. The Tower is particularly infamous as a prison for traitors, including prominent figures such as Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, Thomas More, and Guy Fawkes. Many prisoners were executed within the fortress walls, some on the Tower Green, an inner courtyard where executions took place to exclude the public.

Another highlight of the Tower is the British Crown Jewels, housed in a specially secured exhibition. This collection includes some of the world's most valuable and historically significant jewelry, including the diamond-encrusted crowns of the British monarchs.

A well-known tradition of the Tower is the presence of the Yeoman Warders, also known as Beefeaters. Originally responsible for the protection of the Tower and its residents, these guardians now serve as official guides and keepers of the building's history. Equally famous are the Tower's ravens, believed by legend to foretell the fall of the kingdom if they ever leave the Tower.

Today, the Tower of London is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited attractions in the United Kingdom. It offers a unique opportunity to delve into British history, from medieval architecture to royal legends. Visitors can explore the ancient walls, admire the Crown Jewels, and learn more about the dark and fascinating stories hidden within these historic walls.

The Tower of London is a truly fascinating place, rich in history and incredibly well presented. Everything is beautifully described, making it easy to follow the stories behind this iconic fortress, from its role as a royal palace to its darker past as a prison. For anyone even slightly interested in history, this is an absolute must-visit. The atmosphere of the ancient walls, the stories of past monarchs, and the legendary ravens all add to the unique experience. A true highlight of the visit is the Crown Jewels – simply breathtaking. The intricate craftsmanship and historical significance make them an unforgettable sight. Highly recommended for history lovers and anyone wanting to experience a key part of British heritage!

This was one of the highlights of our trip to London. The history and tradition on show is quite simply mind blowing. To see it all still being down as it has been for 100s of years is fascinating. The Yeoman Warders who live and work in the tower conduct regular tours which last about an hour and is an amazing way to see the tower. Their knowledge and passion is phenomenal. A big shout to Yeoman Warder 408 'Basher' Briggs who led our tour. He was thoroughly engaging and knowledgeable. His pride in his job and the place he works is evident in every stride. Amazing. This is a must for anyone visiting London.

I’ve visited 3-4 times but still feel like there is more to see and learn. The signs throughout are great but they also have audio guides (free via their website or paid in person) available. The signs provided a good level of information for me, but my spouse liked the extra tidbits on the free audio guide. For non-English speakers, may want the audio guides as most interior signs are English-only. We spent about 3-3.5 hours onsite on a Friday in January, and though busy it wasn’t crowded. This allowed us to see the Crown Jewels area in about 20-30 minutes, 40-60 minutes in the White Tower’s displays, and 1.5-2 hours between the Beauchamp tower, Bloody Tower, one-room torture display, medieval palace, and battlements (including their towers). White Tower is probably my favorite as has a mixture of building history, architecture (love the 900 year old chapel), interesting objects like Henry VIII’s armour, King’s swords and storehouse. There are around 200 stairs, but even the turret-type stairs were fairly even and had a handrail. Practical: Toilets are clean, nice cafe.

I have been 3 times and loved it everytime. This time I saw the Crwon jewels and it was mind blowing. My wife and I used tje guid via headphones which meant we took it all in at our pace. The changing of the guard was moving. Dive into the immense history of the 11 towers...you will not be disappointed. I will advise there are many steps so be prepared for this. Take your time and enjoy

I went to the Tower of London at around 12 midday on a Monday afternoon, it was a fantastic experience and I would recommend it to everyone! I was not expecting any sort of guided tour , but a Beefeater guided tour had just been scheduled to begin right as i arrived so i joined the group. The gentleman names Barney did an amazing job, he is a born storyteller and made the tour not only entertaining but extremely informative! His tour was the highlight of my visit! I also explored the Crown Jewels gallery and the white tower armoury which were both beautiful and fun to explore.

On our recent visit to the Tower of London, we decided to arrive in style—by boat from Canary Wharf, which I think is the best way to see some of London’s most iconic sights from the Thames. As we cruised along the river, we enjoyed fantastic views of HMS Belfast, Tower Bridge, and the City skyline before stepping off right by the Tower itself. It’s a great way to appreciate how the Thames has shaped London’s history. Stepping inside the Tower feels like traveling back in time. Built by William the Conqueror in 1066, this fortress has served as a royal palace, prison, and treasury. One of the highlights was seeing the Crown Jewels, which are even more dazzling in person than in photos. The Yeoman Warders (Beefeaters) gave a brilliant tour, sharing fascinating stories about famous prisoners, executions, and ghostly legends. We also explored the White Tower, where we saw Henry VIII’s armor and medieval weapons, and walked along the ancient walls, taking in stunning views of the Thames and modern London. The ravens, known as the guardians of the Tower, were fascinating to see up close—legend has it that if they ever leave, the kingdom will fall! The Tower of London is open daily: • Tuesday–Saturday: 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM • Sunday & Monday: 10:00 AM – 5:30 PM Booking tickets online in advance is recommended, as it can get busy, especially in peak seasons. Whether you’re a history lover or just exploring London, arriving by boat and visiting the Tower is an unforgettable experience!
